- The group was named after mishearing 2,000 Maniacs as 10,000 Maniacs. 2,000 Maniacs is an ultraviolent 1964 film by horror schlockmeister Herschell Gordon Lewis about some northern tourists who stumble into a southern town and are violently murdered in revenge for a massacre by Union troops 100 years ago.
