Music Therapy and What It’s Used For

Music is used for more than entertainment. It is also used as a therapeutic process called music therapy. Research has been done that proves music has the ability to change one’s mood. It can put you in a better mood, can make you feel relaxed when things are stressful, or it can also make you feel romantic and loving. Music therapy does more than affect or change the way you feel. It is a scientific process to heal and improve someone’s overall wellbeing. It has the power to heal and improve both psychological and physical pain. Because it is more than entertainment, the value of music should never be underestimated.

Music therapy needs to be completed in a controlled environment by a professional doctor. Listening to music or suggesting a song to a friend will not be satisfactory for the purposes of music therapy. If you are interested in music therapy, you will need to work with someone who has been certified as an approved music therapist. Music therapy is used for these purposes: combating stress, wellness, improving memory, ability to show/communicate emotion, reduce or alleviate pain, improving results from physical rehabilitation, and improving communication.

Music therapy can include sessions that involve listening to certain types of music to performing music acts or dancing. Based on what an individual needs, the music therapy program designed needs to be custom and individualized. Music therapy is used in a number of different hospitals, nursing homes, dentist offices, psychiatric offices, and in schools. You don’t have to be sick or injured to use music therapy, and healthy people can use it to control the amount of stress they feel.

Hospitals use music for a number of different reasons. It can be used to help patients fall asleep and rest peacefully, and it can be used to calm a patient if they are feeling anxious. It is great for use with physical therapy because it motivates a patient to work harder and feel motivated. You may notice that when you listen to music while you work out, you work out harder and longer. This is the same concept.

This type of therapy is beneficial and can improve someone’s quality life. There is a lot of research on the effectiveness of it, and is even reimbursable by some insurance companies. Music should be a part of everyday life because it is so beneficial to our wellbeing. Music can be as simple as entertainment and as complex as using it for healing and therapy.

Led Zeppelin – Creators of Heavy Metal

The 70s and 80s was an era of and the introduction of Heavy Metal. One of the leading bands who helped introduce and make heavy metal popular was Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin was an English rock band formed in 1968 by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Prior to being labeled Led Zeppelin, the group came together as “The Yardbirds” a band that Eric Clapton once played lead guitar for. After Clapton left, the band later reformed under a new name, came to America and before long sold over 200 million albums worldwide including 111.5 million certified units in the United States. The band Led Zeppelin also ranked #1 on VH1′s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
Led Zeppelin released their first album in 1969 during their first U.S. tour. The album was considered a nice blend of blues, folk and eastern influences.

They were also described as the heaviest band of all time by Rolling Stone. Many even suggest that Led Zeppelin’s album “Led Zeppelin II” wrote the blueprint for heavy metal bands. The title and genre assigned to Led Zeppelin of heavy metal had Plant concerned who at the time was afraid it would typecast the group. Plant said it was unfair for Led Zeppelin to be labeled heavy metal as a third of their music was acoustic. Then, as now, the definition of heavy metal was music that has its roots in blues-rock and/or psychedelic rock. It is also characterized by amplified distortion, extended guitar solos and lyrics associated with masculinity and machismo.

While the label “Led Zeppelin II” gave the band its heavy metal genre, “Led Zeppelin IV” showed off the band’s unique talents. The album included songs such as “Black Dog, “Going to California”, and “Rock and Roll.” The album proved to be the band’s best selling history thanks mostly to the track “Stairway To Heaven”.

Stairway to Heaven, the most requested song by the band, was played at every tour from its release in 1971. The song was voted number three in 2000 by VH1 on its list of 100 Greatest Rock Songs.

The song was also considered controversial as some Christian evangelists suggested that it had hidden messages in the song that were masked. The technique, they said, was called backward masking and hid messages about Satanism. Some stated that in the section of the song where lyrics say “If there’s a bustle in your hedgegrow, don’t be alarmed now”, if played backward stated “Here’s to my sweet Satan” and “I sing because I live with Satan”. The band ignored such claims stating that their ‘turntables only play in one direction, forward, and that it would be a silly waste of time to record something like this.

What was Led Zeppelin’s biggest musical influence when first getting started that made them such a success? Certainly all the talent of Bonham, Jones, Page and Plant didn’t hurt. Some state that with Page’s layered guitar work, Plant’s upper-timber vocals, Jones’ melodic bass playing and keyboard work along with Bonham’s thunderous drumming created alchemy, how could they go wrong.

It was after the death of drummer John Bonham that the group disbanded in the early 1980s. Robert Plant went on to launch his solo career and Jimmy Page formed “The Firm with former Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers. John Paul Jones began producing, arranging and scoring music.

The group did rejoin in 2007 for a concert in London. Surviving members along with deceased drummer John Bonham’s son Jason performed. Whether the group performs again or not, it is hard to tell. But it certainly has already left a lifetime long legacy.

Cover Bands and why We Love Them

A cover band is a music group that performs songs originally produced by other famous bands. Sometimes, they dress like the original band, take on their persona, and rock out like the classics. Some of them name their group as a spoof to the original and come up with creative names like Odyssey instead of Journey. Cover bands are different than a band covering a song from an original artist. Cover bands strictly perform the band they are trying to emulate. Some bands that are trying to make their way into the music industry will do a cover of a song from a more famous band, but rerecord it to make it sound like their own.

Some cover bands choose the tops songs from a certain decade to perform. Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes is a cover band the goes through three decades during their performance and have costume changes for each decade. They play the top hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Another successful cover band that performs hits from a certain time era is the Three Dog Night band. They cover a variety of songs from the 60s and 70s. A fun place to go in Austin, TX is the Cedar Street courtyard where you can see the band called the Spazmatics perform 80s hits.

While some cover bands focus on a particular decade or decades, other bands that do covers focus on a single group. They are often called tribute cover bands. A popular tribute band that covers all the greatest hits from the original band called ABBA is called Gabba. A tribute band that performs only Beatle’s hits is called the Egg Men, and they got their name from one of the Beatle’s songs. Tribute bands are so fun for people who had loved the original band back when they were in their prime. Some bands don’t tour anymore, so fans will watch tribute bands to hear their favorite music live.

Besides covering bands from a certain decade or specific band, some groups will perform a cover and change the genre of the original song. For example, Trans Siberian Orchestra performs traditional classical style Christmas songs and turns them into rock songs. Some jazz artists will take a famous rock song and play it on an instrument like a saxophone or a piano to change the genre of it.

On a different scale, there are also a lot of impersonators that act exactly like an iconic star. You have probably seen these folks in Las Vegas or Hollywood. Perhaps the most famous person to be impersonated is Elvis Presley. Other iconic stars are also impersonated like Cher or Madonna. Some impersonators just walk around the street acting like the original star, and others perform shows and concerts.

Olympic Performance

The opening ceremonies for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada took place on Friday evening. The performances by the dancers, musicians, athletes, and laser light shows were stunning. The opening ceremony paid tribute to not only the athletes, but to Canada and its rich aboriginal tradition. We learned about Canadian culture and were mesmerized by the performances. Famous Canadian singers performed during the show and included the talents of Sarah McLachlan, Nikki Yanofsky, Bryan Adams, and Nelly Furtado.

Nikki Yanofsky blew everyone by her young age and amazing voice. She is only sixteen years old and belted out the Canadian national anthem, O Canada. She is a Canadian pop singer from Montreal who also incorporates jazz sounds into her music. She is working on releasing her first studio album.

Another great performance that was filled with energy and talent was by Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams who sang Bang the Drum. Bryan Adams has been releasing albums that have been popular in both the United States and Canada since 1980. He is a Canadian rock singer who also writes songs and plays musical instruments such as the piano, guitar, bass guitar, harmonica, and the keyboards. He and Nelly Furtado sounded great during their performance of Bang the Drum which was an Olympic tribute song.

Nelly Furtado is also a Canadian singer who grew up in Victoria, Canada. Her music has topped the American music charts and Internet Radio stations as well as traditional American radio programs. She has worldwide fame and sings folk, pop, R&B, and Latin rock music. She also plays an array of instruments such as the ukulele, guitar, trombone, and keyboards. She has been nominated for American, Latin, and European awards.

Sarah McLachlan has such a beautiful voice to accompany her outstanding piano playing. She performed a song while the Alberta Ballet dance company interpretive danced during her song. She sang one of her own songs, Ordinary Miracle, while she played the piano. Sarah is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and has also been a success in the United States. She sings emotional ballad pop songs and plays the harp, piano, and guitar.

In addition to great music being performed, the opening ceremony had dancing, cultural storytelling, and hundreds of fiddlers playing music. The ceremony included tap dancing, interpretive ballet dancing, and aboriginal dancing. The LED light show was mesmerizing and the poem read by Shane Koyczan was captivating. There were Olympic performances that will be remembered forever.

The Who Performs at Super Bowl

The National Football League (NFL) hosts the championship game between the two best football teams in the nation at a game called the super Bowl. Fans start rivalries, teams practice for weeks perfecting their plays, companies make the best commercials they can, and one outstanding band rehearses to perform during half time. The Super Bowl half time show gets almost as much hype as the game itself. Before the game gained a lot of viewership and popularity, the halftime show consisted of marching bands like you would see at high school or college games. Once they saw the potential for exposure, they introduced famous bands or singers to perform.

This year, The Who, was the headline performer at the Super Bowl and performed in the half time show. Queen Latifah sang our national anthem, and Carrie Underwood performed the Star Spangled Banner. The Who performed as a solo act and didn’t use other bands, musicians, or dancers during the show. They had an incredible stage set up in the center of the field with a lot of lights that made a lightshow during their songs. They performed four of their most popular songs which were Who Are You, Pinball Wizard, Won’t Get Fooled Again, and Baba O’Riley. As their performance was broadcasted on television, you could hear the crowd in the stadium singing along and really enjoying the show.

The Who consists of current members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Pete played awesome guitar during the show. Former members Keith Moon, John Entwistle, and Kenney Jones no longer tour with the band. They have touring members that played with Pete and Roger at the half time show, and the touring members are John Bundrick, Pino Palladino, Zak Starkey, and Simon Townshend.

The band has been performing since 1965 and has released numerous hit albums. They are an English band that plays rock, art rock, pop rock, and hard rock music. They are best known for their live performances and instrument destruction while on stage. We didn’t see any of the destruction during the half time show, so perhaps they have calmed their performances down. A lot of heavy metal rock bands imitated their style of performance using instrument destruction. The Who have released 17 albums during their career and are still performing.

Their unique sound and live performances have won them both national and universal recognition. They have been inducted into the American Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame. They have also won Grammy awards and lifetime achievement awards.
