Just a few days after the release of Born This Way’s country music version, Team Gaga contacted Indian music producers Salim-Sulaiman to freshen things up by making a Bollywood version of the hit song.
Speaking in an interview with MTV News, one half of the Indian composing duo, Sulaiman Merchant, said that the job entrusted to them was a bit difficult in the beginning, considering the aggressive nature of the song and its huge popularity.
He said that Born This Way has all the things that are required for a club banger, so to turn a club centric song into a Bollywood listeners’ favorite was a very challenging task.
One of the basic things they did was to incorporate a sitar into the beat, which instantly turned the theme more India-friendly. They maintained the song’s aggression, but switched the style more to house.
Sulaiman also credited entertainment blog Desi Hits as the mediator between them and Gaga’s management.
Salim Merchant, the other half of the team, said that they wanted to give Born This Way a typical Indian feel and even had the idea of introducing some Sufi music touch to it as well.
After getting over the initial jitters, they quickly stamped their mark on the Mother Monster’s creation.
Salim further added that in spite of the enormous cloud of pressure that stemmed from the fact that Born This Way is a number one song, they have done justice to the track and it has turned out as a beautiful rendition in the end.
He said that once they put their hands on the track, everything became magical and started to become easy. Salim regards the new Born This Way sound as the one of celebration.
There is no doubt that Lady Gaga is an international phenomenon, but she has yet to fully flourish in India, which has one of the major music industries in the world.
According to Sulaiman, Gaga’s low profile in India means that Born This Way hadn’t attracted the kind of audience that the song deserves, but their involvement and the new Bollywood version means that the song will get a major lift in the South Asian region. Sulaiman thinks that the remix has already started to attract attention in India and pretty soon all eyes and ears will be focusing on Gaga material.
What was Gaga’s response to the new Indian rendition of Born This Way?
Salim revealed that the pop superstar liked it very much. When they sent her the final product, she gave them a ‘big very, very positive response.’
The duo also expressed their delight that the remix was of good enough standard to please Gaga, who is now gearing up for the release of her ‘Judas’ music video.bollywood, Lady Gaga, salim-sulaiman
